Ian and the team at Vineyard Solutions came in May 2012 to plant our 5 acres of Bacchus just on the edge of the Romney Marsh, Kent. As an
alternative to hand teams or their German counterparts, the laser guided Unimog was perfect for the job. Trying to stick with the best of British, Vineyard Solutions also made the galvanised posts, saving me money both in importation from the continent and in more expensive end posts.

Working in combination with advisor Duncan McNeill, the pair have found that their own design of post is perfectly strong enough for the task of lasting out the life of the vines; importantly the same post can be used for the end as the intermediary. The high capital expenditure of establishing vines of between £10-15,000/acre without a return for at least three years is plenty enough, for us it was important to manage the costs closely, sourcing a lot of the hardware through our buying group Southern Farmers, using local contractors to erect the posts and of course using the competitively priced Vineyard Solutions."

We are only a small vineyard - 1250 vines-  but Ian Phillips and Vineyard Solutions took just as much trouble with our planting and trellising as if we had been a much bigger client.

I was particularly impressed by the way Ian designed and fabricated special galvanised posts to carry netting to deal with a major local problem - the vast flocks of starlings that migrate to the Somerset Levels at the beginning of October.

Full marks for planning and execution!

VSL - Beacon Down Vineyard

Vineyard Solutions Ltd managed the supply and installation of all the critical aspects in the establishment of our vineyard – vine supply, trellis, materials and equipment. Their great strength has been their commitment and capability in every aspect and their partnership approach where we worked together to achieve our goals. Using VSL significantly de-risked the project - they really are a one-stop-shop.

Throughout the project Ian has been fully available to discuss what needed to be done and the options around vine selection, field and soil preparation and equipment. The company’s relationship with a large and reputable nursery in Germany and experience of planting for established major English vineyards provided great confidence in the quality of the vines and their planting capabilities.

We talked regularly and in detail about the project which gave us confidence that things were progressing and in-hand. Communications were excellent - emails and phone calls were quickly responded to. Ian thought ahead to plan out problems that could occur, which ensured things went very smoothly. Where issues arose they were dealt with quickly and effectively.  On-site the team was knowledgeable, friendly and efficient.

Their knowledge of vineyard operations was also insightful and recommendations for operational efficiency savings related to machinery purchases and approaches have been well received.  A selection of machinery, including tractor and sprayer, were sourced and supplied at competitive prices which included delivery, training and follow-up support.

Having the same team involved from planning to planting to trellis installation has been incredibly beneficial and has made our transition to vineyard life a lot smoother than it otherwise would have been I’m sure. The vines have established well with a low failure rate. Beacon Down is up and running!

Hilden Vineyard

Since I first had the idea a year ago to start a vineyard in my back field, VSL has helped me every step of the way and one year on the 5,000 vines are in rude health and just going into their first winter.

This help has covered everything necessary to set me up from soil sampling, through planting, trellising and learning spraying routines.

VSL have helped not just with advice but with carrying out key tasks at the right moment. Thank you for all the assistance so far.

Bredon Hill Vineyard Worcestershire,

We recently planted  a new 2 Hectare vineyard . We employed VSL to help us design and fit the whole trellis system to the vineyard of 6 kilomers of rows. We did have an issue that they sorted out for us , it was a public footpath that ran right across all the rows at an angle in the middle of the 2 hectares . Luckily Ian at VSL is a lateral thinker and came up with the solution  and fitted it for us .

Really nice chap to get on with and will use him again on the expansion in 2018 . We have already recommended him to others .
